Architectural Excellence
Originally, Wellspan was looking to add a mobile imaging (MRI unit) trailer to fulfill their need. Due to limited space and cost, IMS was contacted to provide a solution for a permanent building to house a Philips Ingenia Elition 3.0T X MRI. The Wellspan design had to maintain a cohesive architectural aesthetic with the existing campus, the placement had to fit within the available footprint, and the construction had to be carried out in a manner that did not disrupt daily medical operations. The layout was created with a 1-unit modular building that was 855 sq. ft in size. The layout consisted of an equipment room, a scan room and a control room. With a brick exterior, the building blends effortlessly into the overall medical center. Modular construction proved to be an effective solution to minimize operational disruption as well as allow site work to progress concurrently with the fabrication of the modular unit, thereby reducing the project schedule.
Technical Innovation & Sustainability
The factory-built portions of the building were constructed to 75% completion level, with finishes installed at the project site. A non-combustible, factory-built MRI building was built with Electrical, RF Shielding and Magnetic Shielding. The highly sensitive areas were construction built in a factory environment, delivered on-site and installed with minimum impact on existing facility. The MRI needed to be installed through the roof of the modular building due to its size, sensitivity to movement and fragility. Since time was sensitive and speed of install was a factor, the building was constructed off site. With the ingenuity of this new MRI facility, Wellspan Health & Surgery Center is able to offer their patients a sophisticated MRI that can read and interpret data using artificial intelligence, providing faster scan speeds, clearer images and a quieter, more calming experience.
Cost Effectiveness
The building was delivered with all specialty components included, allowing for the construction disruption period to be limited to approximately 90 days, thus reducing overall construction time by 50 percent over conventional construction at a cost significantly less than the site-built option. The MRI magnet was crane lifted and installed through the roof of the installed modular building. The speed and knowledge used during this project allowed IMS to minimize any cost overruns, and to help the Wellspan staff get their patients a permanent place for the MRI through this quick turnaround. Modular construction allowed for this change without disrupting the work that was already in process and offered the ability to keep the imaging suite construction on the same time schedule as the larger building.
