O'Connell East Architects design 24-story modular
Europe's tallest modular building—a $34 million UK project—is currently under construction. Designed by O'Connell East Architects of Manchester, the 24 story student dormitory is made up of 805 modules and will be built in 27 weeks. Here Jenny Hayes, RIBA from O'Connell East Architects speaks with MBI about their modular system as a solution for multi-story accelerated building.
Going for Gold. LEED® Gold certification expected
for 60,000sf modular project
In 2008, Xstrata Nickel, a leading developer of mineral resources around the world, contracted with NRB Inc., a leader in off-site permanent modular construction technology in Canada and the US, to design, build and commission a 60,000sf Administration/Dry facility; the first LEED certified project for both companies in Canada, and one of the first ever for the commercial modular construction industry. The project is completed and has been filed with the CaGBC for certification based on the scorecard total of 41 points.
Colorado's Club Commons II modular project awarded
LEED-Silver certification by USGBC
as reported by the Snowmass Sun, June 10
The Club Commons II employee housing project has been awarded LEED-Silver certification by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC). According to the USGBC registry, the project is the first affordable multi-family employee housing project in Colorado to be awarded the LEED-Silver as part of the LEED for Homes program . . . "The town, the design-build contractor, the modular unit manufacturer and Related WestPac as developer worked as a team to honor the commitment of achieving this 'green' certification," said Jim D'Agostino, Related WestPac's Senior Vice President of Construction.

This spring, Tesoro Corp., a Hispanic-owned general contractor in Virginia Beach, Va., is putting the finishing touches on a Naval Deperming Station in the Elizabeth River near Norfolk, Va. Not only are Tesoro's workers constructing 1,140-foot-long concrete piers, but they're also contributing to the readiness of the U.S. Navy's Atlantic Fleet. The end result of their efforts will be a station where ships and submarines are exposed to high-voltage electricity in order to erase their magnetic signatures and protect them from enemy detection.
Case 21 modular classroom offers energy savings and green design for school districts.
Interview with Scott Dunlap, AIA, LEED AP
Architecture Involution LLC (Ai3) and Triumph Modular recently launched the CASE 21 classroom solution - a high-performance learning environment employing state-of-the-art green design, organizational layout and educational technology integration - the perfect classroom to address space, learning environment and budget needs of school districts. MBI speaks with Scott Dunlap, AIA, LEED AP and Partner of Ai3 about the role of modular construction for school space needs during this time of both green evolution and economic uncertainty.
Senior-friendly green project takes top prize in MBI's student design contest
Tasked with designing a high-performance, modular community center for seniors, architecture students recently competed in the Modular Building Institute's fourth annual student green building design competition. The competition included a real-world client, Piedmont Housing Alliance, which is currently planning a replacement community center at its low-income senior housing development in Crozet, Va.
Modular Building Institute sees opportunities in stimulus bill
The Modular Building Institute (MBI) announced that it has identified more than $11 billion outlined for building, renovation, and improvements of facility types such as military barracks, child development centers, schools, military housing, and border stations in the new economic stimulus bill. Signed yesterday by President Barack Obama, these identified opportunities are all well suited to the modular, assembly line process of construction.
