Shaver Green: Portland's accelerated and affordable superstructure
With a ground-breaking in May, Portland's Shaver Green Building becomes one affordable housing project designed to achieve LEED gold or platinum certification. Portland's Daily Journal of Commerce covered the event noting that the development company, Armstrong Stafford, was "selecting finishes and building materials to achieve LEED goals and to keep cost as low as possible, while building living spaces that will last and remain affordable for at least 60 years." What may be most remarkable about the structure, though, is that it is a six-story building constructed in six months.

All American builds famed "Smart Home" for exhibit in Chicago
Just one year ago, the Modular Building Institute (MBI) featured an article by Michelle Kaufmann, a leading architect and innovator in modular, green design. Now we can report that one MBI member has helped communicate this architect's eco-friendly vision with the delivery and assembly or "set" of the mkSolaire™ home for the extended exhibit Smart Home: Green + Wired. See how Michelle Kaufmann's eco-friendly home is built in factory.

60,000sf mining complex will be built in 7 months using off-site construction
Driven by the need for a much shorter project completion schedule and reduced impact from on-site construction activity, Xstrata Nickel, in conjunction with architect Lemay Associé of Montreal, Quebec, and its EPCM provider, Hatch-McIntosh, explored the current trends and technology available with permanent modular construction as an alternative to conventional means when faced with building a 60,000sf facility.

Architecture student's vision inspires green classroom
Charlottesville Waldorf School (Waldorf) has spent the last twenty-five years educating their students on the importance of taking care of the environment, and has a core mission of "Setting the 'Green Standard.'" When Waldorf needed extra space fast for the 2008 fall school start, it believed that a green modular classroom would fit their purpose and vision. With a little help from the Modular Building Institute, this Virginia school was able to place an eco-friendly portable.

Modular goes green -- and greener
Modular building provider, Williams Scotsman, introduces three sustainable office units for general contractors to green their jobsites. Enlisting the Baltimore-based architecture firm Hord Coplan Macht, Williams created the "reMod lineup" of three sustainable products -- informally referred to as light, medium, and dark green -- that are just now coming to market.

Low-cost housing to be legacy of 2010 Games
Up to 36 units of affordable housing will be built in Saanich as part of the legacy of the 2010 Olympic Games . . . At the conclusion of the 2010 Games, temporary modular housing units from the Olympic and Paralympic Village at Whistler will be dismantled, removed and set up again as permanent affordable, housing suites.

Modular Building Hitting Green Stride
Resource conservation and flexibility are two important concepts in sustainable design. Facility management (FM) professionals who are focused on reducing their organizations' environmental footprints surely have these ideas in mind as they consider upcoming construction projects. Reducing the energy and materials used in building a new facility is a step that can have a positive impact further down the line.

New era for Indy's mobile office leader: Newly acquired Pac-Van expects to continue strong growth
As seen in The Indianpolis Star
It seems as if Pac-Van has always been in "acquisition mode." Since its founding in 1993, the Southwestside Indianapolis company -- which sells and leases mobile offices, modular buildings and storage containers -- has been named to numerous "fastest-growing" lists from growth fueled by buyouts of rivals.
